Threesixty Architecture and developer Cityheart Ltd. have submitted a planning application for a 40 bed student housing block in Elgin for the University of the Highlands and Islands. The project will bring back into use the derelict site of the former Bishopmill House care home. Occupying an elevated site with views over the town, the building is designed to be domestic in scale. Split into two wings, the L-shaped plan helps to define the external space around the building and provide a welcoming and sheltered entrance approach.
Taking cues from the surrounding context the external palette of materials is simple and straightforward with vertical bands of rainscreen cladding in varying textures and formats used to help order the fenestration and provide scale to the elevations. Each block ends with strong gables picked out in crisp white render aligned to reflect the pattern of development around.
