Threesixty Architecture and developer Cityheart Ltd. have submitted a planning application for a 40 bed student housing block in Fort William for the University of the Highlands and Islands. This is the second phase of student accommodation in the town and will occupy part of the former St Mary’s Primary School site on Fassifern Road – currently disused.
Occupying a location between the large mass of the Belford Hospital and more domestic buildings further up Fassifern Road, the massing and elevations of the 3 storey building have been carefully considered to mediate between the complex range of scales around the site. The main part of the building is a simple pitched roof form with a slate roof. The gable to the south is angled to provide a better relationship with the adjacent properties.
A smaller, two storey wing to the north which houses separate studio apartments is picked out in render and helps to define the entrance to the building. Vertical rainscreen cladding emphasises the strong vertical proportions while bands of render help to tie the composition together. Splashes of colour are used to enliven the important gable elevations.
