Eastgate Centre

Like many UK Shopping Centres, Eastgate Centre in Inverness suffers from a high percentage of vacant retail space. Our Client was keen to explore how this space could be repurposed from retail use to a complementary offer that would drive greater footfall into the Centre. Our brief was to transform a significant square footage into a variety of leisure uses that would create a new destination within Inverness.

The existing Centre fronts onto Falcon Square. Rather than engaging visually and physically with the square its original design is inward looking and thus presents blank façades to a major public space in the city. Our design concept was to create ground floor activity with active unit frontages onto Falcon Square and emphasise the upper storeys – and leisure use within – with a dynamic and visually striking façade that offers a distinctive backdrop to the public space.

The proposals envisaged the creation of more than 30,000sqft of restaurant and café space at ground and first floor level. All ground floor units opened out onto the square offering external seating while an 8-screen cinema (1100 seats) was created on the second floor.
