Stowmarket, East Anglia
This energy sector building deliberately highlights the processes of a Biomass Energy Centre. In doing so it delivers a memorable and unique identity within the wider Muntons complex.
The flues, hoppers and other elements unique to the building type are picked out in a strong unified colour in deliberate and pronounced tonal contrast to the black cladding.
This cladding unifies a variety of different elements, providing a plinth for the strikingly symmetrical composition of the boiler houses. These are contained behind polycarbonate beacons that diffract the light within to glow across the wider landscape.
The entire composition is heroic in scale and balanced in composition. It is achieved through the considered use of sensible industrial materials, not only faithfully reflecting the processes within but celebrating them.
